Meet Our June Members of the Month: Scott and Christine Draper

Why did you become a member of the Fine Arts Center?

We became members of the FAC to support the arts in Colorado Springs. We have both been involved with the arts in some form since we were children, and believe that exposure to art in its various forms is important. My wife is a teacher and believes that exposure to arts is critical to education. I chose my profession of dentistry because I wanted to work in an area that is artistic in nature.

When did your interest in the arts begin?

My interest in the arts began as a young child. My grandmother had art projects for us every summer. All the grandchildren – male or female – painted plaster, oil painted, and learned macramé, crochet and knitting at some point over the years. My aunt was in community theater and I saw musicals or dramas from an early age. My wife played baritone, flute and piano growing up and I played the oboe. I also performed in community theater as a teenager.

What has been one of your favorite plays, classes or exhibits at the Fine Arts Center and why?

There are too many great productions to remember.  My wife’s favorites include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Beauty and the Beast. Mine are likely Sweeney Todd and Mary Poppins. On the drama side, we both thought 4000 Miles was incredible. I have taken numerous art classes over the years, but have settled into wheel throwing for the past three years. If anyone wants a free piece of pottery, let me know.

What is your favorite work of art at the FAC?

Both of us agree that our favorite piece of art is the Chihuly chandelier in the foyer of the FAC. His exhibits have been incredible, and we are so glad that the FAC managed to acquire some of his work.

What else do you like to do for fun in Colorado Springs?

We are outdoor people – skiing in the winter, hiking and camping in the summers. We are both avid readers as well.
