Why did you become a member of the Fine Arts Center?
When we retired, we had more time to enjoy the benefits. We joined the FAC to take advantage of the new art exhibitions, classes, theater and the opportunity to meet people.
When did your interest in the arts begin?
Allen: My interest began with my college history of art class.
Carol: We began attending the Learn to Look classes and were “turned on” to the exhibitions here and in Denver.
What has been one of your favorite experiences at the FAC?
Allen: Favorite play: 4000 Miles; I enjoyed the relationship between grandmother and grandson. Favorite Classes: Bemis art classes with instructors Patrice Filler and Erin Gillespie. Favorite Exhibit: The Chihuly exhibit; all the color and forms he did with glass were interesting and enjoyable.
Carol: A Christmas Story has always been a favorite and to see it on stage was delightful. It is too hard to pick a specific exhibit, as they are all different and unique. Chihuly was very special as was the Salvador Dali wood block prints and John James Audubon’s birds. See what I mean?
What is your favorite work of art at the FAC?
We enjoy the Frank Mechau mural Wild Horses in the courtyard, and the history and architecture of the original FAC building and restaurant. Dinner on the balcony was very romantic. Trio by Walt Kuhn is also stunning.
What else do you do for fun in Colorado Springs?
Try out new coffee shops and restaurants, attend the Colorado Symphony, go for walks, and work out at the Briargate YMCA. Library 21C is near our home and we like the activities and classes offered there.
