DESCRIPTION:Explore new and creative collage processes! Work with paint\, pastels\, inks sprays\, and learn how to design with image transfers on a variety of surfaces such as tea bags\, rice paper\, glassine\, deli papers\, and more. With a variety of techniques\, you will be able to create fabric paper and other prepared papers\, either painted or printed. Additionally\, you will discover the historic process of paste paper\, a surface paper design with coloring paste. Then bring all your learnings together by making fabric fusion collages and adhering them to books and canvases. SUMMARY:Eiko Otake: I Invited Myself\, Vol. II
DESCRIPTION:Otake’s first museum solo-exhibition\, I Invited Myself\, Vol. II\, foregrounds the artist’s video and media\, which have developed alongside her dance\, choreography\, and performance installations. Spanning from 1980 to the present\, the works on view feature a body as it moves in and through various spaces\, including the urban infrastructure of Tokyo and New York and the vast landscapes of Wyoming and California. Working closely with the curators\, Otake choreographs her media works for the galleries of the Fine Arts Center. Editing and updating them for this occasion\, she also brings in related\, weathered objects. A self-described “immigrant artist\,” Otake has challenged the expectations of a museum presentation. Rather than presenting a cohesive overview of the artist’s career\, I Invited Myself places an emphasis on transition over statis. Viewers are strongly encouraged to return as select media will rotate over the course of the exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:Explore painting with tempera paint on a plaster surface\, similar to how experts did in the early centuries\, but on a smaller scale. This method produces bright\, vibrant paintings. Styrofoam provides a sturdy lightweight base for the plaster compound\, and when it dries\, makes a dry absorbent base for wet tempera paint. This medium is great for painting impressionistic style still life and flower arrangements\, or even abstract style compositions. You will have the opportunity to paint 2 paintings\, plus have some fun with abstract plaster shapes. There is a material fee of $5 due to the instructor on the first day of class. \n\nAges 16-Adult

SUMMARY:Screening: No Rule is our Rule
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Otake’s solo exhibition I Invited Myself\, vol. II\, join us for  No Rule is our Rule (2022\, 75 mins). \nFilmed by Wen Hui and Eiko Otake in China in January 2020\, and collaboratively edited during the pandemic. \nThis is a story of friendship between two independent female artists and their body memories each willingly carry. In January 2020\, New York based\, interdisciplinary performing artist Eiko Otake arrived in Beijing to visit Wen Hui\, a Chinese choreographer and filmmaker. Eight years apart\, Eiko grew up in postwar Japan and Wen during the Cultural Revolution. They planned to visit each other for a month to converse and collaborate. \nThe surge of COVID-19 abruptly cut off Eiko’s visit and the pandemic has so far made Wen’s visit to the USA impossible but not the collaboration. Q&A will follow. \nCollaborators: DonChristian Jones (Performance)\, Jinqui Guan (Video)\, Liz Sargent (Video)\, and Elise Butterfield (Dramaturg). \nFree and Open to the public\nPerformance will take place in CC’s Cornerstone Black Box Theatre \n\nEiko Otake\nBorn and raised in Japan and a resident of New York since 1976\, Eiko Otake is a movement-based\, interdisciplinary artist. She worked for more than 40 years as Eiko & Koma\, but since 2014 has been working on her own projects. such as A Body in Places\, The Duet Project and I Invited Myself. Since 1980’s\, Eiko has also created a large number of media works\, “dances for camera\,” and documentaries. Created in post-nuclear-disaster Fukushima over six visits\, A Body in Fukushima produced many photo exhibitions\, performances\, and a book publication. The feature-length film of the same title was premiered at MoMA’s Doc Fortnight Festival and shown in other film festivals. www.eikootake.org \nDonChristian Jones is a New York based interdisciplinary artist\, singer/songwriter\, and producer. His work spans musical and time based performance\, rap albums\, video and public murals\, blending genres of painting and performance installation. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 2012\, where he studied painting both there\, and abroad in Rome\, Italy. Don has shown and performed at institutions such as The Whitney Museum\, MoMA Ps1\, New Museum\, Brooklyn Museum\, Carnegie Center\, and was a collaborating artist-in-residence at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation\, Captiva\, Florida with Eiko Otake. Forbes listed DonChristian’s debut album “Where There’s Smoke” as one of the ten best Hip Hop albums of 2018.

DESCRIPTION:Explore painting with tempera paint on a plaster surface\, similar to how experts did in the early centuries\, but on a smaller scale. This method produces bright\, vibrant paintings. Styrofoam provides a sturdy lightweight base for the plaster compound\, and when it dries\, makes a dry absorbent base for wet tempera paint. This medium is great for painting impressionistic style still life and flower arrangements\, or even abstract style compositions. You will have the opportunity to paint 2 paintings\, plus have some fun with abstract plaster shapes. There is a material fee of $5 due to the instructor on the first day of class. \n\nAges 16-Adult
